Today, people have the tendency and ability to be more sedentary than ever before thanks, in part, to advancements in technology, transportation, and entertainment. Research suggests that sitting for long durations may contribute to serious negative health outcomes such as cardiac complications, increased risk for certain cancers, and even early mortality.

Companies that are getting on board with focusing on employee wellness in the office are on the right side of history. Research is showing that companies that invest in this type of wellness are finding success, not only with employee devotion, but in terms of their company’s bottom line.

Famous perk-filled companies like Google, General Mills, Twitter, Zappos, and many other companies, large and small, offer on-site yoga and exercise classes. They don’t require much up-front investment — so even small companies can get in on supporting employee fitness during office hours. Employees can bring their own yoga mats (if needed) and only one instructor is needed to lead a class of one or one thousand!

Why You Should Invest in Office Movement

You might think that Yoga or Tai Chi would cause tired, unfocused employees in the hours post-exercise. But studies show that this isn’t the case. Researchers from the University of Bristol studied the effects of midday office exercise on employees. They looked at 200 university staff and employees working for an IT firm and pension company. The workers completed a questionnaire about their mood, workload, and performance on days when they exercised — whether using a gym or doing group classes — and days when they did not. The University of Bristol found some interesting stats.

These are massive numbers, showing not only that exercise classes can help employees, but that they can help significantly. And more productivity, clearer heads, better moods, enhanced creativity, lower stress, and prolonged mental stamina will help your company in the long run.
